    A key strategy of the South African national response to HIV is the scale-up of HIV counselling and testing (HCT) in the 15–49 years age group. The integrated school health policy aims to guide the roll out of youth-friendly health services including the provision of HCT in schools. Using a discrete choice experiment to examine preferences regarding the attributes of HCT service packages, this study identifies barriers to and facilitators of HCT among high school learners. …

    The Department of Basic Education National Policy on HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections and Tuberculosis 2017 was developed through a participatory consultative process with stakeholders inside and outside the Basic Education sector. The Policy presents a bold new vision for the sector, to drive the response on HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) as well as Tuberculosis.

  4. Parents' perceptions of HIV counselling and testing in schools: ethical, legal and social implications

    In view of the high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in South Africa, particularly among adolescents, the Departments of Health and Education have proposed a school-based HIV counselling and testing (HCT) campaign to reduce HIV infections and sexual risk behaviour. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, our qualitative study explored perceptions of parents regarding the ethico-legal and social implications of the proposed campaign.   5. HIV/AIDS and the South African Bill of Rights, with specific reference to the approach and role of the courts

    An outstanding feature of the 1996 South African Constitution is the inclusion of a Bill of Rights, which contains all the categories of human rights that are ordinarily included in most international human rights instruments. Section 27 provides for, among other things, the right to health care services and the right to emergency medical treatment. Several other provisions in the Bill of Rights are quite relevant to the fight against HIV/AIDS and to protecting the rights of those who are infected. …

  6. The effect of educational attainment and other factors on HIV risk in South African women: results from antenatal surveillance, 2000-2005

    Objectives: To assess the effect of educational attainment and other factors on the risk of HIV in pregnant South African women. Design: Repeated cross-sectional surveys. Methods: Pregnant women attending public antenatal clinics were tested for HIV annually between 2000 and 2005, and provided demographic information. Logistic regression models were applied separately to the data collected in each year, to identify factors associated with HIV infection. Data from all years were combined in a logistic regression model that tested for trends in HIV prevalence. …

  9. Correlates of HIV knowledge and testing: Results of a 2003 South African Survey

    This research study investigated the correlation between HIV knowledge and testing. The researchers' hypothesis was that there would be significant relationships between knowledge of HIV transmission and getting tested for HIV, educational level, and gender, as well as testing and gender and knowing someone who has HIV or has died of AIDS. The study design used a convenience sample and was conducted in South Africa. 429 volunteers filled out the Carey and Shroeder Brief HIV Knowledge Questionnaire. Results indicate that as education level increased, knowledge of HIV did also. …

  11. Feasibility, acceptability, effectiveness and cost of models integrating HIV prevention and counseling and testing for HIV within family planning services in North West Province, South Africa

    In South Africa, care and support and antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for individuals infected with HIV is available at a few selected hospitals as a first step in the national treatment roll out. However, counseling and testing for HIV (C&T) is currently limited to antenatal care (ANC) settings and a few stand-alone centers. Uptake is limited, even within the ANC setting where C&T is systematically offered to clients for the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). C&T services have yet to be integrated into other reproductive health services. …

    This booklet is a positive prevention end-user guide for people living with HIV. Positive prevention methods aim to increase the self-esteem and confidence of people living with HIV to protect their own health and avoid passing HIV to others. They promote the rights of people to safer sexual relationships, the fulfillment on their reproductive choices and living a full and healthy life. Positive prevention represents a synergy between prevention, treatment, care and support.

    This report aims to identify and describe what is considered good practice as regards workplace HIV programmes. It is anticipated that the findings will feed into the national-level Higher Education Workplace HIV and AIDS Programme Framework and down into the Higher Education Institution (HEI)-specific workplace programmes.

    The purpose of the study summarised in this document was to determine the roles of educators in mitigating the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and to ascertain the skills and knowledge required by them to play such roles effectively. Recognising that educators have a crucial role to play in all education subsectors, the study investigated the current and possible future roles of educators in schools and further education and training (FET) colleges as well as those of educators working in the higher education (HE) subsector.
