The single unifying feature of all of the cases was each intervention's goal of assisting children to exercise their right to education as guaranteed in article 28 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

    In 2005, an estimated 48 million children aged 0-18 years, that is to say 12 percent of all children in sub-Saharan Africa, were orphans, and that number is expected to rise to 53 million by 2010.
