  2. HIV/AIDS education: what African youth say is effective

    This study on HIV/AIDS-education programs was conducted with the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports in a national sample of 76 secondary schools in Uganda. Participants included secondary students (N = 883) who critiqued their formal and informal school curricula and offered youth perspectives regarding what teaching mediums and programs of HIV/AIDS prevention are most effective.     This case study describes a collaboration between the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and the YouthNet and IMPACT Projects of Family Health International that was supported with funding from the Bureau for Global Health of USAID.     Poverty and limited access to health care, education, and paid employement create situations that make young people most vulnerable to HIV infection. This paper examines the importance of developing strategies to involve young people in income-generating activities to fight HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. These strategies support young people in gaining important skills and earning income to reduce their own poverty.   8. HIV/AIDS in health, education and participation: an action space for youth involvement in the SADC Region

    In the SADC region, the HIV/AIDS rate is one of the fastest growing. This is especially true in the case of young adults and adolescent children. It is important to begin indoctrinating these children with comprehensive health skills and stronger self esteem to protect themselves. Mitchell presents strategies for both formal and nonformal education to reform education systems to begin preparing youth to assume the physical responsibilities to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
