  1. Primary education in eastern and southern Africa: increasing access for orphans and vulnerable children in AIDS-affected areas

    This research and analysis assesses national and community level initiatives that have the potential to increase primary education access for children who have been orphaned (or made vulnerable) in areas heavily affected by AIDS in the eastern and southern Africa region (ESAR). This assessment analyzes various initiatives to learn lessons that can be used to more effectively target resources to increase primary education access for orphans and other vulnerable children in this region.

  3. Predicting the social consequences of orphanhood in South Africa

    This paper examines and questions the predictions found in the academic and policy literature of social breakdown in Southern Africa in the wake of anticipated high rates of orphanhood caused by the AIDS epidemic. Analysis of the logic underlying these predictions reveals four causal relationships necessary to fulfil such dramatic and apocalyptic predictions:1.   6. Orphanhood and the long-run impact on children

    This paper presents unique evidence that orphanhood matters in the long-run for health and education outcomes, in a region of Northwestern Tanzania, an area deeply affected by HIV-AIDS in Africa. We use a sample of non-orphans surveyed in 1991-94, who were traced and reinterviewed in 2004. A large proportion, 23 percent, lost one or more parents before the age of 15 in this period, allowing us to identify the impact of orphanhood shocks. Since a substantial proportion reaches adulthood by 2004, we can also assess permanent health and education impacts of orphanhood. …

  7. Orphanhood and schooling in South Africa: trends in the vulnerability of orphans between 1993 and 2005

    Using eleven nationally representative surveys conducted between 1993 and 2005 this paper assesses the extent to which the vulnerability of orphans to poorer educational outcomes has changed over time as the AIDS crisis deepens in South Africa. This paper seeks to establish whether the fear that extended families are no longer effective safety nets may be overstated or whether traditional coping strategies are indeed breaking down. Patterns of care giving for orphans do appear to be shifting over time but these changes are taking place within the extended family safety net. …

  9. Making a Difference for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS: Baseline Findings from Operations Research in Uganda

    In Uganda, PLAN International, Makerere University, and the Horizons Program performed a study to assess the impact of an orphan support program on the physical, educational, and emotional wellbeing of children. The researchers also studied a different program, called succession planning, in which children are reached before the death of the parent.   12. Investing in Our Future: Psychosocial Support for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS. A Case Study in Zimbabwe and the United Republic of Tanzania

    As the number of HIV/AIDS orphans continues to grow, programs are being established to ensure proper health and schooling for these children. This document takes the support into the psychosocial realm and explores ways in which effective interventions have been developed and implemented to help orphans and affected youth develop a strong self-image and to strengthen self-esteem. The case studies show NGOs and organizations that work and are at work in the United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

  13. Intersecting Risks: HIV/AIDS and Child Labour

    This paper analyses the mutally reinforcing factors that, as a result of HIV infection among adults, contribute to child labour and may place child workers at risk of HIV infection themselves. In some instances, these contextual factors run parallel; in others, they intersect, thereby putting working children at greater risk of HIV infection or of suffering the consequences of infection.

The aims of this study were to: a) Identify the strength and weaknesses of the youth organisations' HIV/AIDS interventions b) To assess the link that exists between youth organisations and developmental initiatives by government in KwaZulu-Natal. c) To assist KwaZulu-Natal youth organisations to develop coherent interventionist strategies to deal with the pandemic. d) To identify appropriate links to be made between youth organisations and civil society organisations on, specifically on HIV/AIDS related issues.
