Each of the country offices commissioned the documentation of case studies to identify promising practices and challenges around effective implementation of NPAs.     Although not part of the national curriculum until 2004, HIV/AIDS education has been taught for some time in Ugandan secondary schools through a variety of extracurricular means, including the media, youth groups, drama, music, and Parent Teacher Associations. This paper identifies and evaluates the integration of HIV/AIDS information into the national curriculum in Ugandan secondary schools between 2002 and 2004, based on the viewpoints of administrators, teachers, and students from 76 schools. …

    The Young Empowered and Healthy (Y.E.A.H) Initiative is a multi-channel communication campaign by and for young people that combines mass media, person-to-person dialogue, and community media. The mission of Y.E.A.H is to stimulate dialogue and action among communities, families, schools, and health institutions; and model positive practices through local and national media. Y.E.A.H is designed to contribute to a reduction in the incidence of HIV and early pregnancy and to contribute to an increase in the proportion of young people that complete primary education and beyond. …

    The Sourcebook documents 12 cases in 6 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa - Kenya, Rwanda, Swaziland, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia - that represent a wide range of approaches designed to address the educational rights and needs of orphans and vulnerable children. The single unifying feature of all of the cases was each intervention's goal of assisting children to exercise their right to education as guaranteed in article 28 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  8. It works! Communication for HIV prevention and social change in adolescents: a mid-term review

    Straight Talk Foundation (STF) has worked for 15 years to better the lives of Ugandan adolescents. Its focus has been HIV prevention and improved adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). STF's approach builds on the voices and stories of young people, parents, teachers and health workers to create "conversations" and generate solutions.
