    This handbook is one of a series of four methodological documents: 1 - Appropriate communication for behavioural change; 2 - Strategy and policy building; 3 - Field work: building local response; 4 - Project design and implementation. Each specific handbook deals with two major topics: i) A general explanation of the cultural approach to HIV/AIDS; ii) Specific sections focus on the levels of action to be considered: strategy/policy, project design and field work. The present handbook comprises two major divisions: situation analysis and ways and means for building appropriate strategy/policy. It includes cross-references to the other three handbooks.

The package (a 1999 World AIDS campaign document) focuses on communication with children and young people, raising awareness about the need to listen to children and young people and strengthening AIDS programmes for children and young people.

    This document outlines policies and principles for the prevention and care of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). It is designed to assist those who are involved in developing and implementing STD programmes. Although, it does not provide a detailed description of activities that may be used in the implementation of such programmes, some areas are highlighted in the Annexures to serve as models that can be adapted to local situations.

  7. A Cultural approach to HIV/AIDS prevention and care: Handbook for strategy and policy building

    This handbook is specifically devoted to presenting methods for building culturally appropriate strategies and policies in relation to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care. The joint UNESCO/UNAIDS Project "A Cultural Approach to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care" was launched in mid-1998, in relation to the new approach inaugurated by UNAIDS to HIV/AIDS prevention and care. The UNAIDS strategy emphasizes the necessity of giving priority to the multi-dimensional configuration of the issue and to the diversity of its environment, in order to build comprehensive and adaptable strategies and policies.

    This UNESCO guide is a collection of examples of "best practices" in HIV/AIDS preventive education for African women especially the illiterate and the semi-literate. It is the result of contributions from some twenty coordinators of African women's grassroots organisations, specialists and national and international experts involved in HIV/AIDS preventive education.
