    The purpose of the study summarised in this document was to determine the roles of educators in mitigating the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and to ascertain the skills and knowledge required by them to play such roles effectively. Recognising that educators have a crucial role to play in all education subsectors, the study investigated the current and possible future roles of educators in schools and further education and training (FET) colleges as well as those of educators working in the higher education (HE) subsector.

    This paper reports preliminary findings on how a primary teacher-training college in Kenya is preparing teacher trainees to teach about HIV/AIDS.     This paper illustrates how HIV/AIDS is affecting teachers as individuals and as professionals. Teachers are expected to play a major role in combating HIV/AIDS, but at the same time, the results of this study show that they are also being affected by the disease. And unless the difficulties that they face in their workplace and at home are dealt with, it is likely that the gravity of the disease may become unbearable for some of them.   13. A possible future of HIV and AIDS management in the school education sector in South Africa

    In South Africa HIV and Aids threaten the world of education if one only looks at prevalence rates. Approximately 5,41 million people in the country are living with HIV and Aids, of whom 257900 are children up to the age of 14. In a survey done by HSRC and the MRC about the health of South Africa's educators it was determined that the HIV prevalence among this group, across provinces age groups, gender and race, is about 12,7%. …

  14. The impact of the AIDS epidemic on teachers in sub-Saharan Africa: a further update

    It is still widely anticipated that the AIDS epidemic will have a devastating impact on the education sector in Africa. Faced with this impending crisis, leading experts have called for a transformation in the functioning of schools and the mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS in the education sector supported by donors. Numerous reports and articles state that the number of teachers dying from AIDS-related illnesses continues to increase very rapidly and that this is causing serious shortages of teachers. This article updates the figures that are known in that field.

  15. Estimates of the Impact of HIV and teacher ART take-up on the Education Sector on the achievement of EFA in Rwanda

    This impact analysis revealed that the number of HIV positive teachers is likely to increase, as could AIDS mortality and absenteeism. ART, particularly second-line ART could reduce these problems and save money. HIV prevalence in Rwandan teachers could reach 12% by 2015. Considerable effort is required to reduce pupil-teacher ratios and increase orphan school attendance. Rwanda can celebrate its successes in increasing net enrolment.
