  1. Gender Dynamics and Sexual Norms among Youth in Mali in the Context of HIV/AIDS Prevention

    Socially constructed ideas of gender norms and values attached to sexuality need to be considered when aiming to build the young people’s capacity to adopt HIV preventive behaviours. We conducted ten focus groups and sixteen individual interviews to explore sexual norms among youth in Bamako. Premarital sex, multiple partnering, condom use and transactional sex were discussed. The findings suggest that young people’s sexual norms are shaped by kin or authoritative elders as well as by external influences coming from Western culture. …

    President Obama announced the U.S. Global Health Initiative (GHI) in May 2009 as a step in developing a comprehensive, global health government strategy. One of its seven central tenets relates to "women, girls and gender equality." Eight GHI Plus countries (those in which the US rolls out health programs selected for accelerated implementation of GHI).   3. Access of girls and women to scientific, technical and vocational education in Africa

    UNESCO's General Conference at its 28th session (Paris 1995), budgeted a project on 'Technical, scientific and vocational training for young girls in Africa'. Pursuant to this decision, the Regional Office for Education in Africa in Dakar (BREDA), in cooperation with headquarters started with a preparatory phase to implement the project aimed at identifying what determines girls being guided into scientific and technical streams. During 1996-1997, surveys were conducted in twenty English and French countries in Africa. …
