    As part of a two-country study (with Tanzania), RAISON was contracted by UNESCO to carry out research into the needs of children in school living with HIV and the extent to which their rights and needs were being fulfilled.     In South Africa HIV and Aids threaten the world of education if one only looks at prevalence rates. Approximately 5,41 million people in the country are living with HIV and Aids, of whom 257900 are children up to the age of 14.     After a brief overview of the situation of HIV/AIDS in the education sector in Malawi, the document aims to present the government response to HIV/AIDS: involvement of local communities, development and implementation of the HIV and AIDS strategy and plan of action in the education sector, mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS, research activities to assess impact of HIV and AIDS in the education sector, collaboration with other stakeholders, strenghtening policies and legal framework of HIV and AIDS, awareness and extracurricula activities as well as recommendations.

  6. Factors influencing access and retention in secondary schooling for orphaned and vulnerable children and young people: case studies from high HIV and AIDS prevalence contexts in Lesotho

    The aim of this study was to identify factors influencing access and retention in secondary schooling for orphans and other vulnerable children living in high HIV prevalence areas of Lesotho. A case study approach was used to address this aim. The findings from this study have been used to inform an intervention that seeks to increase access to learning and thereby reduce drop-out and repetition rates in secondary schools.
