    In Eastern and Southern Africa, at least 120 million children and youth are not able to attend school due to COVID-19 related school closures. More than 16 million affected school-children in the region rely on school meals and nutrition services. This joint note provides key messages and guidelines for governments and WFP and UNICEF Country Offices to lead assessments, planning, implementation and system strengthening for risk-informed and resilient school health and nutrition programmes in response to COVID-19.

  4. Educational and health impacts of two school feeding schemes: Evidence from a randomized trial in rural Burkina Faso

    This paper uses a prospective randomized trial to assess the impact of two school feeding schemes on health and education outcomes for children from low-income households in northern rural Burkina Faso. The two school feeding programs under consideration are, on the one hand, school meals where students are provided with lunch each school day, and, on the other hand, take-home rations that provide girls with 10 kg of cereal flour each month, conditional on 90 percent attendance rate. After running for one academic year, both programs increased girls’ enrollment by 5 to 6 percentage points. …

    According to WHO 2012 estimates, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) was responsible for 842 000 annual deaths from diarrhoea and 15% of the Global Burden of Disease in Disability- Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). In South Africa, diarrhoea and respiratory infections are a major public health problem, and are amongst the top causes of death in children. Respiratory and diarrhoeal infections are ranked the 2nd and 3rd leading causes of death amongst the under-5 population, and the 3rd and 4th biggest killers in children between ages 5-14 years. …

  7. Water, sanitation, and primary school attendance: a multi-level assessment of determinants of household-reported absence in Kenya

    This cross-sectional analysis examined the influence of school and household water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions on recent primary school absence in light of other individual, household, and school characteristics in western Kenya. School latrine cleanliness was the only school WASH factor associated with reduced odds of absence. The marginal effect of household characteristics, such as distance to water source, child involvement in water collection, and presence of a latrine, differed by gender. …

    The Ghana Cost Benefit Analysis was conducted to bring to the attention of government and other stakeholders in school feeding, the investment returns that school feeding yields, and to see school feeding not just as a cost, but as an investment in the Ghana’s human capital and the economy at large.     There is limited experimental evidence of the impact of large-scale, government-led school meals programs on educational achievements. The authors report results from a nationwide randomized trial of the Government of Ghana’s school feeding program. After two years, program availability led to moderate increases in test scores for the average pupil, and to remarkable learning and cognitive gains for girls, and children from the poorest households and regions. Increases in enrolment, attainment, and shifts in time spent at school constituted mechanisms for impact. …

  15. Stratégie Nationale de l’eau, de l’assainissement et de l’hygiène en milieu scolaire (2018-2030)

    Au Tchad, les services sociaux de base sont faibles avec une disparité croissante entre les zones urbaines et rurales. Les plus récentes estimations de l’OMS et de l’UNICEF font état de 78% d’accès à l’eau potable pour le milieu urbain contre 32%, ce qui représente moins de la moitié en milieu rural. L’accès aux services d’assainissement est très limité avec seulement 3% de la population en milieu rural avec un accès à un assainissement de base et 82% qui pratique la défécation à l’air libre. Au niveau national, il s’agit de 68% de la population soit environ 9.5 millions.
