    The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a health problem in which the disease impacts not only on the physical health of individuals, but also on their social identity, making it different from most other fatal diseases.   15. Developing District-Level Early Warning and Decision Support Systems to Assist in Managing and Mitigating the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education (DEMMIS)

    This paper, presented at the Barcelona International AIDS Conference in 2002, details a pilot project for DEMMIS in districts of KwaZulu Natal province. The pilot project, or district-level Education Management & Monitoring Information System (DEMMIS), was developed to answer the need for regular HIV/AIDS sensitive data gathering systems.The data are captured at month-end in the school and sent to the district office for inclusion in an ACCESS database.The results of this project are presented here.
