    This meeting brought together the Ministers of Education and other health and education experts from fifteen Latin American and Caribbean countries to exchange experiences and successful practices that address four priority areas: obesity, lack of physical activity, substance abuse, and sexual and reproductive health.

    This article presents a model for research on the effects of school organizational heath factors on primary school academic achievement in Trinidad and Tobago. The model can be applicable for evaluating schools in other developing countries. As proposed, the model hypothesizes relationships between external factors (exogenous variables), school-level factors (endogenous variables), and school outcomes (student achievement and positive school climate). The endogenous variables are sub-scales of school organizational health. …

  6. Effective approaches to addressing the intersection of violence against women and HIV/AIDS: Findings from programmes supported by the UN Trust to End Violence Against Women

    In 2005, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, with support from Johnson & Johnson, opened a special funding window for the 2005-2008 programming period to address the intersection of violence against women and HIV/AIDS. Through this funding window, the UN Trust Fund made grants to a unique cohort of grantees in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean to support programmes aimed at reducing violence against women and its consequent risks for HIV/AIDS as well as to reduce the violence, stigma, and discrimination that women living with HIV/AIDS face. …

  7. HIV prevention interventions in Trinidad and Tobago: mapping of work conducted in HIV prevention from 2004-2010

    The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a major public health concern in Trinidad and Tobago. In keeping with the UNAIDS global thrust of examining HIV prevention in order to halt HIV transmission and "Scale-Up" the response, Trinidad and Tobago has conducted a review of its HIV prevention efforts for the period 2004-2010 to guide the way forward in HIV prevention.

  9. Overlooked and at Risk: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in the Caribbean

    As long as criminalization of homosexuality and stigma, discrimination and violence against LGBT individuals continues in the Caribbean, the emotional and physical health of LGBT young people is at risk. All young people have the right to be treated equally under the law and to live free of discrimination and harassment. Organizations, governments, and individuals must work toward full acceptance and recognition of LGBT people, including young people.

    This "Health and Family Life Education" curriculum was developed by Gerard Drakes, Mavis Fuller, Christopher Graham and Barbara Jenkins, in coordination with a number of different official partners of Caribbean countries, as well as UNICEF, UNESCO and the Education Development Center Inc (EDC).
