  3. HIV prevention among vulnerable populations: the Pathfinder International approach

    This publication provides a background in the risks faced by populations especially vulnerable to HIV and AIDS. The document outlines strategies effective in prevention of HIV and AIDS among sex workers, men who have sex with other men, and injecting drug users. Programs described include peer education, comprehensive health services and quality of treatment, provider referral networks, and in-service training and sensitization.

  8. Social and economic determinants of unequal HIV care access among people living with HIV in Peru

    Equity in access to health care among people living with HIV has not been extensively studied in Peru. This research aims to assess the extent to which health care provision for persons living with HIV was equitable and where there was lower access, and the factors associated with lower access. The study was conducted among adult PLHA in four cities in Peru. Between September 2008 and January 2009, 863 individuals from four cities in Peru were enrolled. The study found that transgender identity and age younger than 35 years old, were associated with lower access to health care. …

    Background: In 2009, 6.7% of the estimated 1.1 million persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the United States were youths (defined in this report as persons aged 13–24 years); more than half of youths with HIV (59.5%) were unaware of their infection.   13. Working with transgender children and their classmates in pre-adolescence: Just be supportive

    This study documents a school district’s coordinated response to an elementary student’s social transition from a gender variant boy to a female gender expression. Data were gathered through analysis of journal entries, lesson plans, and interviews with the child, guardian, and district personnel. Stakeholders reported a favorable outlook on the transition, particularly in the areas of classroom and school interventions, peer involvement, and maintaining safety for all.
