  2. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down": LGBT bullying and exclusion in Japanese schools

    Based on interviews with more than 50 LGBT students and former students in fourteen prefectures throughout Japan—as well as teachers, officials, and academic experts—this report documents bullying, harassment, and discrimination in Japanese schools based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, and the poor record of schools when it comes to appropriately responding to and preventing such incidents.

  3. HIV prevention through extended education encompassing students, parents, and teachers in Japan

    The article developed an extended HIV prevention program for students, parents, and school teachers, and then evaluated its effectiveness. The findings suggest that effective prevention of HIV might be achieved by an expanded education program for students and teachers such as that described, and individual counseling that takes into consideration the sexual differences of Japanese adolescents.

    ONE has prepared this accountability report to monitor progress made towards the beginning of the end of AIDS. Specifically, the report tracks progress made on three key targets–the virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission, 15 million people on treatment, and the drastic reduction of new HIV infections–and assesses the political, programmatic, and financial contributions made by a variety of stakeholders (traditional donors, African leadership, emerging economies, and the NGO/private sectors).

  7. Knowledge and attitudes toward AIDS among female college students in Nagasaki, Japan

    This study assesses knowledge and attitudes concerning HIV infection and individuals with AIDS among 383 female students attending colleges in Nagasaki, Japan. A structured questionnaire containing questions concerning knowledge about AIDS, sources of information, beliefs and attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS was administered during sessions set up for that purpose.
