    The iCAN package aims to help address the challenges facing adolescents and young people living in the East and Southern Africa (ESA) region. It has been designed to support young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) and those who work with them, to help them understand their HIV positive status and empower them to plan their lives in ways that protect both their own health and that of others. The package can be used to complement existing materials focusing on sexual and reproductive health and HIV, and other youth-focused packages produced by partners working with YPLHIV. …

  2. Accelerating education’s response to HIV and AIDS

    A review was conducted to assess key achievements of the Accelerate Initiative, lessons learned and possible ways forward. The output of this review is a technical paper titled ‘Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV and AIDS: Five Years On’, which describes how UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank and other partners have been working together since 2002 to help countries in sub-Saharan Africa develop strong leadership in the education sector response to HIV and AIDS.

  5. The EFA Fast Track Initiative: an assessment of the responsiveness of endorsed education sector plans to HIV and AIDS

    This report is the second assessment of the responsiveness to HIV of Education Sector Plans which have been appraised and endorsed by the Education for All Fast Track Initiative (EFA-FTI). The first study was completed in October 2004 and found that the initial 12 endorsed plans did not adequately address HIV; recommendations were made to strengthen FTI processes.     UNESCO's General Conference at its 28th session (Paris 1995), budgeted a project on 'Technical, scientific and vocational training for young girls in Africa'. Pursuant to this decision, the Regional Office for Education in Africa in Dakar (BREDA), in cooperation with headquarters started with a preparatory phase to implement the project aimed at identifying what determines girls being guided into scientific and technical streams.     Recruiting, retaining and retraining secondary school teachers and principals in Sub-Saharan Africa is based on country studies in Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Madagascar, Tanzania and Uganda and an extensive literature review. In many parts of Africa, the demand for secondary teachers substantially exceeds the supply due to factors such as secondary teacher attrition, bottlenecks in the teacher preparation system, and perceived unattractive conditions of service.
