The HIV and AIDS Policy for the National Education System of Papua New Guinea has four main sections, which, taken together, provide an effective response to HIV. These sections are: 1) Prevention for students; 2) Care and support for students; 3) Prevention, care and support of the education workforce; and 4) Managing education’s response to HIV.
We decided to implement this project here in our province (Western Highlands Province, WHP) among 30 institutions due to the fact that there is no decrease to the spread of HIV/AIDS here. HIV/AIDS is on the rise here (PNG) amongst young people. Many young people including schooling teenagers have died of HIV/AIDS. It involves teachers as well, among many who are dying daily in the Province and the country as a whole. Another factor is that HIV/AIDS is highly spreading here in PNG especially among young people. …

This report was commissioned by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) on behalf of the National Department of Education (NDoE). Papua New Guinean primary school students need to know about HIV, STIs, sex and reproductive health to protect themselves and others. Grade 6, 7 and 8 now have a subject called Personal Development which, among other areas, helps them to develop good knowledge, skills and attitudes towards sex, sexuality and sexual health. It prepares them to be responsible adults. In Grade 5 young people learn about HIV/AIDS and STIs in their Health course. Teachers need to be trained on how to teach HIV/AIDS and reproductive health within these subjects and work with their pupils in a positive way. …
