  5. AIDS, governance and quality in Tanzanian education

    This paper will explore the relationships between HIV/AIDS and education in Tanzania, looking particularly at issues of governance. It has been produced as part of the African Civil Society Governance and AIDS Initiative (GAIN), the purpose of which is to investigate the threat that HIV/AIDS poses to the maintenance of stable and democratic governance across Africa. The study will attempt to understand the current situation of primary and secondary education in Tanzania, and to what extent HIV/AIDS is impacting on the level and quality of this provision.

    The overall purpose of this literature review was to identify key themes and gaps in knowledge emerging from literature available on HIV/AIDS and higher education in Africa and in Uganda in particular.     This document is a synopsis of information available on pilot projects initiated jointly by WHO and UNESCO. The document provides a justification and the rationale for education on AIDS at school. It looks at the formulation and design of projects. It presents project objectives, site selection, project preparation and evaluation. The document also contains briefs on projects carried out in Ethiopia, Jamaica, Mauritius and the Pacific Islands, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Venezuela.
