  2. Séminaire régional sur l'éducation et le SIDA dans le système scolaire (Afrique francophone), Dakar, 21-25 avril 1997 : rapport final

    This is the final report of a Regional Seminar on Education and AIDS in Educational Systems for French-Speaking countries in Africa that was convened in Dakar, Senegal, from 21-25 April 1997. The meeting was concerned with mobilising educational systems in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Youth before the first sexual intercourse were identified as a priority target for preventive education at school. The report is expected to guide in the formulation of action and follow-up plans that can quickly be implemented in the various countries.

  3. Family life education. Package one

    The lessons and teaching materials contained in this family life education package have been selected from various existing materials. They are designed to help young people in their physical, social, emotional and moral development in preparation for adulthood. The conceptual framework divides topics into seven areas: family; types of functions; family roles/relationship and responsibility; family life cycle; family resources; marriage; and responsible parenthood/family planning.

    This is a report of the UNESCO/PROAP Sixth Regional Consultative Seminar on Population Education that was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 21-28 May 1990. The main objectives of the seminar were to: 1)examine developments and trends in country population education programmes since the 1986 Regional Consultative Seminar on Population Education; 2)assess new approaches and emerging needs and requirements in population education; and 3)identify new directions for making programmes more relevant and effective.

    This manual provides practical examples of strategies, approaches and materials designed to integrate population education into various development programmes. It is a useful reference for field workers who are involved in planning, implementing and evaluating out-of-school population education programmes.

  6. Counselling and HIV/AIDS

    HIV counseling is an important component of HIV/AIDS prevention. Evaluations from Uganda and Rwanda demonstrated this. Yet, there is a reluctance among some decision-makers and service managers to give HIV counseling its proper due as a discipline through which trained practitioners can produce measurable useful results. It is under-resourced and not fully appreciated.

  9. Gender and HIV/AIDS

    Sexual specificity is defined in terms of what it means to be a man or a woman in society. Sexual specificity has a bearing on opportunities and the distribution of social roles. Social norms play a part in the spreading of HIV. Whether female, male or young, the contamination risks are determined by social projections on the sexes. Therefore, the social dimension of sex cannot be ignored in prevention.

  10. Integration of population education in APPEAL

    This guide was derived from two Regional Workshops on Integration of Population Education which were held in Jay-Giri, Indonesia, and Islamabad, Pakistan, and organized by the Asia-Pacific Programme of Education for All (APPEAL). The activities are divided into four units: 1) basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and STDs; 2) abstinence and postponement of first sexual contact; 3) practicing safer sex; and 4) counselling and support.

    This bibliography includes a review of the literature on education for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. A range of topics are covered including: general information about HIV/AIDS; HIV/AIDS preventive education in schools; training educators in HIV/AIDS prevention and education; care and management of those living with HIV/AIDS; HIV/AIDS information for vulnerable groups; ethical, moral and legal aspects of HIV/AIDS. It also includes WHO guidelines for HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

  15. Adolescence education

    A four-module package for educators on family life education. It is designed as a practical resource guide for teachers, teacher educators, guidance counsellors, youth workers, etc. who are engaged in teaching, training and communicating family life education to adolescents.
