  1. Evidence-based practice in school substance use prevention: fidelity of implementation under real-world conditions

    Fidelity of program implementation under real-world conditions is a critical issue in the dissemination of evidence-based school substance use prevention curricula. Program effects are diminished when programs are implemented with poor fidelity. The authors assessed five domains of fidelity—adherence, exposure (dosage), quality of delivery, participant responsiveness and program differentiation (lack of contamination from other programs)—in a subset of respondents (N = 342) from a national random sample of public schools with middle school grades (N = 1721). …

  2. 2015 ESPAD report. Results from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs

    This report presents the results of the sixth data-collection wave of the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) and marks the 20th anniversary of ESPAD data collection (1995-2015). It is based on information provided by 96 043 students from 35 European countries, 24 of them being Member States of the European Union. About 600 000 students have participated in the successive ESPAD data-collection waves, making the project the most extensive, harmonised data collection on substance use in Europe.

  4. Bridging the gap between evidence and practice: a multi-perspective examination of real-world drug education

    Aims: The study examined normative school drug-education practice in Scotland and the extent to which it reflected the evidence base for effective drug education. Methods: Current guidance in Scotland was compared with systematic review evidence on drug-education effectiveness; a survey was mailed to primary, secondary and special schools (928 questionnaires returned); and 100 drug-education lessons were systematically observed across 40 schools. Findings: Nearly all schools provided drug education but modes of delivery and learning approaches did not always reflect the evidence base. …

    The problem of this study was to investigate the teaching of the integrated topics on drug abuse in the secondary school curriculum as a strategy to wipe out the problem of drug abuse among students in Machakos District, Kenya.   6. Drug use and alcohol consumption among secondary school learners in Gauteng

    This research report focuses on the extent and impact of substance use and abuse among high school learners in Gauteng. The research results presented in this report were collected from randomly selected secondary schools in Gauteng, where 4,346 learners completed self-administered paper-based questionnaires during school time, in the presence of teachers and trained Youth Research Unit staff members. The research findings show that drug and alcohol abuse among young people is a reality with concerning consequences. …

  9. Substance use prevention in educational settings in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: a review of policies and practices

    Promoting health and a healthy lifestyle among children and youth is a national priority for all Eastern European and Central Asian countries, and is reflected in their country policies. Schools have an important role to play in health promotion, by preparing children, adolescents and youth for a healthy and safe adulthood. This review of policies and practices provides a brief account of the achievements to date in prevention education (with special focus on drug use prevention), and outlines the challenges still to be addressed.

  10. Drug prevention programmes in schools: what is the evidence?

    Key messages: Universal drug education programmes in schools have been shown to have an impact on the most common substances used by young people: alcohol, tobacco and cannabis. The approaches which appear to be most effective are those based on social influences and life skills, for example Life Skills Training and Unplugged. Interventions which are not drug-specific but focus on children and young people’s attachment to school can also be effective in reducing substance misuse.     Substance abuse among public secondary school students is reality that is spreading at an alarming rate. If not checked, it could destroy the youth who are in their formative stage in life. Its outcomes include school dropouts, injuries, loss of lives, destruction of properties, moral decadence, misallocation of resources, indiscipline and compromised academic standards.
