    This paper summarises research findings that male sexual aggression against girls is endemic and institutionalized in Zimbabwe. Specifically, findings suggest that adolescent peer group culture in schools encourage students to conform to stereotypical behaviours that make girls vulnerable to sexual abuse. It concludes with a list of strategies for implementation and at schools within communities.

  7. Planned development and evaluation of AIDS/STD education for secondary school students in The Netherlands: short term effects

    This study evaluated the short-term effects of an AIDS/STD education curriculum for 9th and 10th grade students of vocational secondary schools in the Netherlands. The findings of this study support the contention that current AIDS/STD education can be improved by the use of empirical data, the application of multiple theories from the social sciences, and the involvement of representatives within the school system in the development process.

  8. Company level interventions on HIV/AIDS: Assessing the impact of AIDS

    This guideline is prepared as a support to companies wishing to carry out assessment of the impact of AIDS in order to identify cost benefit motivations for prevention. The guideline will also help to highlight areas for interventions aimed at managing the impact of AIDS. It is also intended that this step of impact assessment and areas of vulnerability to HIV/AIDS be part of a bipartite process assessment, planning, intervention and review that addresses health needs at workplace.

    This report is based on findings from a study that was undertaken by the Africa OR/TA II Project and the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) to assist the ZNFPC obtain information that would enable it to develop the most appropriate and cost-effective approach to managing RTIs in its clinics.     This is a manual of group interview techniques used to assess the needs of people living with AIDS. It discusses the advantages of group rather than individual interview techniques. Some of the advantages are: they are relatively inexpensive; they are faster; and can include a more varied range of personnel.   11. Community Participation in Health Care: The Turkish Case

    World Health Organization's global goal of Health for All by the Year 2000 (HFA) and achievement of this laudable goal through the Primary Health Care (PHC) approach has been accepted unanimously by participant countries of the Alma-Ata Conference in 1978 of which, Turkey is included. However, the approval did not generate as much interest among the policy makers until the 1990s.   12. Challenges and Rewards of Involving Community in Research: An Overview of the "Focus on Kids" HIV Risk Reduction Program

    This article discusses the problem of AIDS in relation to adolescents in light of the fact that this is a significant concern for this age group especially in minority populations. There is a scarcity of knowledge of the cultural context of sexual behaviour in this age group and the influences that lead to early initiation of sex and unsafe sex.     TASO (The AIDS Support Organisation) is a voluntary organisation that was founded in 1987 by Ugandans to provide psychosocial support to people living with HIV/AIDS.   14. Tunis Declaration on AIDS and the Child in Africa

    This paper discusses the Tunis Declaration on AIDS and the Child in Africa made by the OAU Heads of State. In spite of previous concerted actions by the OAU Heads of State with regards to HIV/AIDS, the magnitude of the problem of the HIV infection and AIDS in most African countries is on the increase especially among African children who are the most vulnerable group. This fact and accompanying considerations are discussed.
